The EU regulators started to take privacy seriously - since May 2018 the total amount of penalties across the Union reached almost 1 BILLION EURO. Most of the fines were for the failure to implement appropriate security of information or for a poor user interface (lack of transparency).
The reason for that is the General Data Protection Regulation, the EU's personal data protection law, which started to apply from May 2018. It has a significant effect on the companies working on the EU market or targeting EU customers, and it became an international standard for privacy laws across the world.
One of its core principles is 'Privacy by Design', which requires founders to implement user privacy in their product/services from the very design stage. Such approach takes a few simple, but important steps that will save time and funds in the future.
